Hook corrosion rates in salt water

I was asked one day "what is unlimited with all those fish, and swim to end up with a hook in the mouth?"

Now, undesirable as it is, it happens and on Board of our vessels, use gamewe always hooks made of duration in the use of real bait, bait / lure combinations or in many of our Wahoo and large Marlin lures. Duration, I said corroded in contrast to stainless steel, quickly in sea water so that the hook quickly deteriorated and is cast out the fish is or.

It was then for me that I had never seen a study on only, how long it takes a hook up to the point corrode where it expected to drop out or designated by a fish will, so I an amateur bench test carried out:

I chose a number of hooks that we most commonly use boats on board our game . I included only a light stainless steel sensor (Maruto SS1920) as a comparison with the hook of duration of.

The following hooks have been tested:

1. 7766D (duration) - 8 / 0 Mustad rigged bait and bypassed bait for Wahoo

(2) Gamakatsu SL12S salt water fly hook big game - 10 / 0, light combat rigged bait for sailfish

3. Mustad 39960D (duration) tuna circle hook, 13 / 0, manipulated lures for Marlin & sailfish,.

4. Maruto SS1920-2 X stainless steel, 6 / 0, Mall on medium bypassed lures

5. Gamakatsu live bait hook, high carbon steel, 6 / 0, deepwater jigging / bottom fish

6. Mustad 7794BD heights, 1, small Bibbed minnows

Each hook has been crimped to 100 lb monofilament line with a 1.6 mm brass double sleeves and exposed in a container of sea water. Containers were up by plastic beverage bottles cut, screw it down to a Bank and use the tops to keep the soil. The sea water is updated daily and the hooks approved at the same time every day. To test, was each hook removed, with the upper horizontal, point kept down and a weight of five pounds was from the bend of the hook close to the barbs, whether it is sufficient to turn or break weakened had exposed. In the heights, the weight was suspended hook cam cant of only one.

RESULTS

Gamakatsu SL12S - corrosion within 1 day

Mustad 7766D - corrosion began after 2 days

Mustad 7794BD Trebble - corrosion began after 2 days

Mustad 39960D - corrosion began after 3 days

Gamakatsu live bait - corrosion began after 4 days

Then to day 10, apart from some to stabilize further mild surface rust and calcification on the duration, everything seemed hook and nothing much happened.

On day 10, the Maruto SS1920 stainless steel hook finally showed some discoloration and some on the day of 12 small rust spots on the eye and shaft.

Day 14, the hook with 5 kg weight and all tested with flying colors passed. It has not apparently a deterioration in strength, the hook will be one.

After 21 days the hook easily wiped was removed with a cloth, photographed and tested strength.

All hook showed that widespread corrosion with the exception of the Gamakatsu live bait and the Maruto hook only showed slight corrosion on the hook Barb and curve. The duration of light Gage SL12S was the most corroded. A second SL12S that every day in salt water was dipped but suspended in the air one corroded still container of seawater verses far more than the exposed, in salt water - probably due to the increased concentration of oxygen in the air.

Dispel my duration myth

The result was a bit surprised. The hook as expected but the duration hook significantly took longer, that I thought she would. In fact, they were exposed to after 21 days in salt water, despite some surface rust, as strong as ever and ever. Even the barbs were still intact.

FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

In reality, had a hook in a fish mouth to accelerate would however the only way for us to test, live well suspend the hook in one continuous movement of sea water on its surface corrosion, would.

I want everything, what rust in my live well!

I have observed that a duration used hook, at sea and was without a laundry in the fresh water within days basically is useless. This led me to believe that, if a fish left, would the hook quickly deteriorate and fall out within days.

I was completely wrong. Much longer than you think duration hook survival. We will continue to prefer duration hook, because they corrected much faster than I am hook but on their rates of corrosion rust if lost fish. It is not a question of days, it is a matter of weeks.
